Het hitjaar begint met de nummer 1-hit Binnen van Marco Borsato, de eerste nummer 1 van het nieuwe millennium en de Doe Maar-revival wordt in januari ingeluid met de coverversie van De Bom door The Postmen & Def Rhymz (#3). Op 8 april komt Doe Maar zelf met twee nieuwe singles de Top 40 binnen: Watje op nummer 9 en Als Niet Als op 31. Op 2 mei 2000 geeft Doe Maar het eerste van 16 uitverkochte concerten in Ahoy'. Het nieuwe album Klaar komt tot nummer 1. In totaal scoren ze met 6 albums. De hitlijsten staan sowieso vol met oudgedienden. Carlos Santana (53) haalt #2 met Maria Maria en Tom Jones (60) scoort een grote hit samen met Mousse T. (Horny, #10).
Een Nederlandse zomerhit die vanuit het niets de hitlijsten bestormt is Que Si Que No van Jody Bernal. De single staat 23 weken achtereen in de top 10 en zeven weken op nummer 1. Jody scoort met Oh Bambolero ook een top 3 hit. Jody Bernal wordt daardoor ook topact van het jaar. The Vengaboys hebben vier hits in 2000: Kiss (When The Sun Don't Shine), Shalala Lala, Uncle John From Jamaica en Cheekah Bow Wow (That Computer Song). Het succes van The Vengaboys loopt in de zomer van 2000 terug. Uncle John From Jamaica is al na negen weken Top 40 verdwenen. Het wordt nog wel hun zevende opvolgende top 10 hit. Opvolger Cheekah Bow Wow (That Computer Song) doet het nog minder: de single komt niet hoger dan nummer 32. In 2001 scoren ze geen enkele hit meer. Twarres scoort met hun debuutsingle Wêr Bisto de allereerste Friestalige nummer 1 hit sinds het bestaan van de hitlijsten. Van de single gaan meer dan 75.000 stuks over de toonbank. Mirjam Timmer en Johan van der Veen zullen in 2001 nog twee hits scoren met She Couldn't Laugh (#4) en Children (#20). Twarres is ook succesvol buiten de landsgrenzen en bereikt #26 in het jaaroverzicht met de grootste hits van 2000 in de Vlaamse Ultratop. Alice Deejay scoort drie hits, maar alleen Will I Ever haalt de top 10. Kane scoorde in 1999 een klein hitje met Where Do I Go Now, maar in 2000 breken door met drie hitsingles: Can You Handle Me (#10), I Will Keep My Head Down (#12) en Damn Those Eyes (#28). Uit Brabant komen in 2000 hits van Krezip (I Would Stay), Vals Licht (Het Licht #37), Fred van Boeschoten ((Dès 'n) Schôôn Waoge, #22) en Abel (Onderweg).
E-Type verzorgt het officiële thema van het in Nederland en België gehouden EK. Campione 2000 van E-Type bereikt #4. De single 1 2 3 4 Dennis Bier van Harry Vermeegen haalt #27. Jiskefet scoort een #12 met Oh Oh Oh Oranje, een cover van Mississippi van Pussycat.
2000 is een goed jaar voor muziek uit Finland. De zevenmansformatie The Leningrad Cowboys scoren in 2000 een #32 met Happy Being Miserable. De metalband Him (His Infernal Majesty) scoort een #18 met Join me. De Finse danceproducer Darude (Ville Virtanen) scoort in 2000 twee hits: Sandstorm (#14) en Feel the beat (#24). Het succesvolst zijn de Bomfunk MC's (Freestyler #1, B Boys And Flygirls #13). Ook Belgische acts doen het goed in 2000: Scoop (Drop It, Rock The House; een project van Daniël Moerenhout en Jan Vervloet), Milk Inc (Walk On Water, Land Of The Living), de D-Devils (The 6th Gate, geen Top 40) en K3. K3, bestaande uit Karen Damen, Kristel Verbeke en Kathleen Aerts, komen op 2 september 2000 voor het eerst de Top 40 binnen met Heyah Mama. Met een kleine onderbreking staat de single 14 weken in de Top 40 met #18 als hoogste notering. Het begin van een uiterst succesvolle carrière gericht op kinderen van 8-12 jaar.
Muziek van vrouwelijke artiesten doet het goed in 2000. Britney Spears heeft vier hits, waarvan drie de top 5 halen, daardoor wordt ze singles-act #2. Daarnaast zijn er ook grote hits voor Madonna, Anouk, Whitney Houston (If I Told You That #19; met George Michael, Could I Have This Kiss Forever #1; met Enrique Iglesias), Destiny's Child (Say My Name #4, Jumpin' Jumpin' #5 en Independent Women part 1 #2), Jennifer Lopez en Christina Aguilera (What A Girl Wants, Come On Over Baby).
De tv-programma's Big Brother 2, De Bus en Alles Voor De Band leveren vele flops, maar toch ook een enkel succes. 'Big Brother' Ruud (seizoen 1) komt met de flop Some Hearts Never Mend, een cover van Kojak. Big Brother 2 heeft als geflopt themalied Kijk van Gordon en De Sjonnies floppen met Opa Koos, maar de andere realityshow De Bus levert vijf singles op. Buspassagier Iwan covert Een Bossie Rooie Rozen, die brengt het in de verkooplijst tot #8, maar haalt de Top 40 niet. De Golden Earring maakt onder de actnaam Titelmuziek De Bus de single Miles From Nowhere, maar ook die haalt de Top 40 niet. Ook DJ Madman flopt met Sex In De Bus en hetzelfde lot ondergaat Erica Young met het nominatielied Voel Wat Ik Voel. Jop Nieuwenhuizen daarentegen scoort een #1 met Jij Bent De Zon. Barkeeper/bedrijfsleider Jop Nieuwenhuizen zingt in het tvprogramma De Bus dat nummer steeds voor mede-passagiere Antonette. Samen met zijn Antonette neemt Jop later in het jaar het nummer Pluk De Dag op, dat niet verder komt dan de 26ste plaats. De relatie met Antonette zal geen stand houden, Jop houdt op met optreden en start Bar Dancing De Koets in Zeist. Het RTL 4 talentenzoekprogramma Alles Voor De Band doet het niet best op tv, maar is wel een voorbode van Starmaker dat in 2001 wel succes zal brengen. De groep Follow That Dream, geformeerd door Rob en Ferdi Bolland, scoren een #25 met Follow That Dream.
Nieuw en succesvol zijn Craig David (vier top 10-hits: Re-Rewind The Crowd Say Bo Selecta #4 met The artful dodger, Fill Me In #5, 7 Days #6 en Walking Away #7), Eminem (Forgot About Dre/Still Dre, met Dr.Dre #19, The Real Slim Shady #6, The Way I Am #13, Stan; met Dido rond de jaarwisseling #2), Sonique (It Feels So Good #5, Sky #34), Alessandro Safina (tenor die een #3 scoort met Luna), Pink (There You Go #8, Most Girls #23), Kosheen (Hide u #4 en Catch #16), Krezip (I Would Stay #1) en K3 (Heyah Mama #18).
Coverhits zijn er voor Madonna (American Pie; Don Mclean), Rollergirl (Dear Jessie; Madonna), Gabrielle (Rise; Bob Dylan), Black Legend (You See The Trouble With Me; Barry White), Aaron Carter (I Want Candy; Bow Wow Wow - Aaron is het jongere broertje van Nick die bij The Backstreet Boys zingt), Mariah Carey & Westlife (Against All Odds; Phil Collins), Eminem (Stan; Dido), Melanie C & Lisa Lopes (Never Be The Same Again), Whitney Houston & George Michael (If I Told You), Whitney Houston & Enrique Iglesias (Could I Have This Kiss Forever), Five & Queen (We Will Rock You), Freddie Mercury & Montserrat Caballé (Guide Me Home), Wyclef Jean & Mary J. Blige (911), Kylie Minogue & Robbie Williams (Kids).
In 2000 besluit Radio 538 het roer om te gooien. Edwin Evers en & Jeroen van Inkel komen het station versterken.
Er worden 5,4 miljoen singles verkocht, goed voor 26 miljoen euro omzet. Dat het met de muziekindustrie niet zo goed gaat is te zien aan de opnieuw verlaagde normen om in aanmerking te komen voor een gouden en platina plaat. Vanaf 1992 tot en met 1999 was een verkoop van 75.000 stuks goed voor platina, vanaf 2000 heb je aan 60.000 stuks al genoeg. Om een gouden plaat te krijgen hoef je geen 50.000 stuks meer te verkopen, maar 40.000 stuks.
The Corrs scoren in 2000 met vier albums in de Album Top 100 en worden de topact bij de albums. Unplugged is daarvan de succesvolste. Ook Andrea Bocelli heeft vier hitalbums. Santana, André Hazes, Alanis Morissette, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ilse Delange, Anouk, Britney Spears en Doe Maar maken de top 10 albumacts vol. Prinses Christina scoort op 18 oktober al een hit met My Christmas Album.

De zangeres Anneke Grönloh spant een rechtszaak aan tegen Universal Music over de niet uitbetaalde royalty's. De rechter oordeelde dat de claim van Grönloh verjaard was. *** The Backstreet Boys zijn succesvol, maar na elf top 5 hits komt The One in juli niet hoger dan nummer 17. *** De leden van The Spice Girls scoren in 2000 ook solo hits. Daarbij is Melanie C veruit de succesvolste. Zij scoort drie hits: Never Be The Same Again (#1; met Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes), I Turn To You (#1) en op 23 december verschijnt If That Were Me. De andere girls zijn minder succesvol. Victoria Beckham neemt samen met The True Steppers & Dane Bowers de single Out Of Your Mind op en dat wordt een #16. Emma Bunton maakt met Tin Tin Out de cover What I Am, maar die flopt. *** Annie Palmen (73) overlijdt op 15 januari 2000. Zij werd al enkele jaren verpleegd omdat zij dement was geworden. *** Op 14 maart overlijdt C. Jerome. Claude Dhotel had in 1974 een #6 met C'est Moi. *** Ian Dury (57) overlijdt op 27 maart 2000 aan de gevolgen van leverkanker. In 1978 stond hij op #10 met Sex And Drugs And Rock 'N Roll. In 1979 op #9 met Hit Me With Your Rhythm Sticks. *** Op 22 april 2000 overlijdt de Zuid-Afrikaanse zangeres/actrice Margaret Singana (Margaret M'cingana, 62) na een lang ziekbed. In 1989 had ze een nummer 1 met We Are Growing (Shaka Zulu). *** Op 27 april 2000 overlijdt de Amerikaanse zangeres Vicki Sue Robinson aan kanker. In 1976 had ze een #12-hit met Turn The Beat Around. *** Op 28 april 2000 overlijdt D.C. Lewis (53, Ruud Eggenhuizen). *** Linda Wagenmakers doet mee aan het Eurovisie Songfestival met No Goodbyes op de avond van de vuurwerkramp in Enschede. Ze wordt twaalfde. haar single staat met een pauze in totaal 10 weken in de Top 40 en haalt #22. *** Pieter Goemans (75) overlijdt op 8 juli 2000 aan beenmergkanker in Ziekenhuis Amstelveen. Hij componeerde en/of vertaalde o.a. Aan De Amsterdamse Grachten van Wim Sonneveld, de Ploem Ploem Jenka van Trea Dobbs en Een Doodgewone Kat van Joël. *** De Nederlandstalige groep Sushi Kids zingt oude ABBA-hits. Hun debuutalbum komt tot nummer 76. *** Op 30 juni 2000 worden 8 mensen doodgedrukt in het gedrang voor het podium tijdens het concert van Pearl Jam in het Deense Roskilde. De menigte probeerde dichter bij het podium te komen. Onder de slachtoffers is een 23-jarige Nederlander uit Heesbeen in Noord-Brabant. Pearl Jam gaat door. De bandleden overwEgen na de dood van negen fans om te stoppen. *** Op 16 september 2000 overlijdt Mieke Bos die tot in 1963 zangeres was van het Limburgse duo De Selvera's. In augustus 1957 was De Postkoets een #2. *** De band MAX doet een succesvolle poging om het Nederlands record aantal optredens op een dag te verbreken. Ze treden op in veertien Free Record Shops. Een hit levert het niet op. *** Het RTL4 programma Follow That Dream gaat van start. Een vakkundige jury kiest uit een aantal kandidaten de leden van een nieuwe girl-boyband. Winnaars Vanessa, Rosa, Pete, Linda en Ben worden met de camera gevolgd. De single van Follow That Dream wordt ondanks alle promotie geen grote hit: nummer 25 is de hoogst bereikte notering.Ben Saunders wordt tien jaar later alsnog een ster. *** Lee Towers verzorgt op 24 oktober 2000 zijn laatste Gala Of The Year. Hij wil het rustiger aan doen.*** GTST-leden Winston Post, Johnny de Mol, Aukje van Ginneken en Chanella Hodge beginnen een bandje met de naam Good Times. Ongelofelijk haalt #35 in 2001. *** Op 19 december 2000 komt zangeres Kirsty MacColl om het leven bij een speedbootongeluk. In 1981 scoorde ze haar enige Nederlandse hit met There's A Guy Works Down The Chips Shop Swears He's Elvis (#16). *** VPRO's Song van het jaar: Krezip met I Would Stay.
In 1999 bracht Jody Bernal een bezoek aan zijn biologische familie in Colombia. Als afscheidscadeau kreeg hij een cd met Spaanstalige nummers mee. Een van de nummers daarop was Que S,i Que No. Het nummer Que Si Que No is in Colombia bekend als een kinderliedje. De oorspronkelijk versie heet Nunca Te Decides en is van El Simbolo. Jody Bernal schreef een eigen versie van het nummer en dat bracht hij ten gehore in het televisieprogramma Your Big Break; een RTL 4-talentenjacht gepresenteerd door Fabienne de Vries. Hoewel hij de talentenjacht niet won (dat deed Judith Jobse), werd het nummer als gevolg van enthousiaste reacties op single uitgebracht. Jody Bernal staat vijf weken op nummer 1 met Que Si Que No. Daarna staat hij acht weken op 2 en vervolgens nog twee weken op 1. De single verblijft maar liefst 23 opeenvolgende weken in de top 10. In 2001 staat de single nog 3 weken genoteerd. Het nummer groeit uit tot de best verkochte van 2000 en een van de meest succesvolle Spaanstalige single ooit. In het overzicht van de meest succesvolle Top 40-hits aller tijden staat de single in de top 10. In de Mega Top 100 staat de single het recordaantal van 15 weken op 1. Ook Vlaanderen valt voor Jody Bernal; hij staat op 10 in het jaaroverzicht met de grootste hits van 2000 van de Vlaamse Ultratop 50. Jody Bernal (12 november 1981) werd geboren in Bogota, Colombia. Toen hij zes maanden was, werd hij door een Nederlandse familie geadopteerd. Hij groeide op in Delft, waar hij lid werd van het jongenskoor de Buddy's. Opvolger Oh Bambolero wordt in 2001 ook een grote hit (#3). In 2001 doen ook Un Beso Mas (#10) en Dreams (#9) het goed. In 2002 is Me & You, een duet met Belle Perez zijn laatste hit (#9). Later singles floppen. In 2006 zal hij een comeback maken door zijn deelname aan het SBS6-programma Sterren Dansen Op Het IJs. Hij verliest in de finale van Hein Vergeer, maar krijgt wel een contract aangeboden bij Holiday on Ice. In 2008 laat Jody samen met Baychev ook muzikaal weer van zich horen met Shiki Boom Boom. In 2010 zal Jody Bernal te zien zijn in de speelfilm New Kids Turbo.

Medio 2000 verschijnt van Anastacia haar debuutalbum Not That Kind uitgebracht. Als eerste single verschijnt het nummer I'm Outta Love en dat wordt de een na grootste hit van het jaar. Opvolger Not That Kind bereikt #26. In de jaren erna heeft ze vele grote hits zoals Paid My Dues (#4 in 2001), One Day In Your Life (#8 in 2002), Left Outside Alone (#2 in 2004) en Sick And Tired (#2 in 2004). Anastacia Lyn Newkirk (New York, 17 september 1973) zingt naar eigen mening sprock: een mix van soul, pop en rock. Anastacia komt uit een muzikale familie. Haar vader was zanger in het nachtclubcircuit, haar moeder was actrice. Ze danste ze onder meer in Salt 'N’Pepa's videoclip Twist And Shout en deed in 1998 mee aan het programma The Cut op MTV. Anastacia haalde de finale van het programma en dat leverde haar een platencontract op bij Epic Records/Sony Music. Medio 2002 zal Anastacia het nummer Boom! opnemen, het officiële thema-lied voor de FIFA World Cup (#40). In 2003 wordt borstkanker bij de zangeres vastgesteld. De operatie verloopt voorspoedig en artsen slagen erin het kwaadaardige gezwel uit Anastacia's borst te verwijderen. Ze richt daarop een fonds op ten behoeve van jonge vrouwen met borstkanker. Begin 2004 maakt Anastacia een muzikale comeback met het album Anastacia en de single Left Outside Alone (#2). Ze scoort in 2005 een grote hit met Everything Burns (#7), een duet met Ben Moody opgenomen voor de speelfilm The Fantastic Four. Begin 2006 is I Belong To You, een duet met Eros Ramazzotti, een succes (#7). Op 21 april 2007 trouwt Anastacia met haar bodyguard Wayne Newton.

Krezip werd in 1997 opgericht. Eind 1999 tekende de band een platencontract met Warner Music. Krezip breekt door dankzij het optreden op Pinkpop 2000 waar ook de video van I Would Stay wordt opgenomen. Krezip, de bandnaam betekent niets, bestaat dan uit de zussen Jacqueline en Anne Govaert, Annelies Kuijsters, Joost van Haaren, Thomas Holthuis en Thijs Romeijn. De bandleden zijn tussen 16 en 23 jaar als hun debuut uitkomt. Opvolger All Unsaid flopt, maar dat komt vooral door het succes van het album, want dat wordt het op een na best verkopende van het jaar. I Would Stay is in Vlaanderen de single van het jaar in de Ultratop. Het album eindigt in Vlaanderen op #3 in de jaarlijst achter Live en K3. In 2002 zullen de singles You Can Say (#18) en Promise (#16) de Nederlandse Top 40 halen. In 2004 wordt gitarist Thomas Holthuis opgevolgd door Jan Peter Hoekstra en drummer Thijs Romeijn door Bram van den Berg. In 2004 wordt Krezip, tegelijk met andere Nederlandse bands, door hun platenmaatschappij Warner Music op straat gezet. Daarop sluiten de bandleden in 2005 een nieuw contract met Sony BMG. Eerste single Out Of My Bed wordt een #9. Daarna scoren ze hits met Don't Crush Me (#22 in 2005), I Apologize (#30 in 2005), Plug It In & Turn Me On (#21 in 2007) en All My Life (#7 in 2007). Afscheidssingle Sweet Goodbyes komt op 21 februari 2009 binnen, houdt het 25 weken uit met #2 als hoogste notering. Op 27 juni 2009 geeft de band haar laatste concert in de Heineken Music Hall.

Abel liet in oktober 1999 voor het eerst van zich horen middels het nummer Drie Dagen Zon, maar die haalde de hitparade niet. Op 5 februari 2000 komt Onderweg van Abel met zanger Joris Rasenberg de Top 40 binnen. De single houdt het 17 weken vol en komt tot nummer 1. Opvolger Neem Me Mee komt niet hoger dan 22 en daarna is het singlesucces voorbij. Hun album De Stilte Voorbij staat op #71 in de verkoopjaarlijst. Abel staat met Onderweg ook op 5 in het jaaroverzicht van de grootste hits in de Vlaamse Ultratop. Abel wordt bij de TMF Awards uitgeroepen tot Meest Belovende Act. The Acting Crowd werd in 1996 in Effen opgerichten door zanger/gitarist Joris Rasenberg, toetsenist Freek Imbens en basgitarist Robert Stobbelaar, die elkaar al van de middelbare school kenden – en een drummer. In 1997 kiezen de bandleden voor de naam Abel, naar de gelijknamige film van Alex van Warmerdam, en voor het genre Nederlandstalige popmuziek. De eerste demo, die in eigen beheer werd opgenomen, levert Abel een platencontract op. Wanneer de drummer besluit ermee te stoppen en de groep een vervanger en een tweede gitarist zoekt, valt de keuze op drummer Emiel Drost (Fixation) en gitarist Maarten van Damme (ex-Mary Jane). In 2001 en 2002 begint de leegloop binnen de band waarna alleen Joris Rasenberg en de later toegetreden toetsenist Eric Smans overblijven. Eind 2002 heeft men vervangers gevonden in bassist Bas de Groot, drummer Jasper van Hulten en gitarist Tim Eijmaal, maar het tweede album Doen En Laten gaat onopgemerkt aan het grote publiek voorbij. In de Coen & Sander-show wordt Onderweg van Abel op 17 december 2009 met 30% van de stemmen uitgekozen tot grootste one hit wonder van het eerste decennium van de 21ste eeuw.

In 1999 scoorde de Bomfunk MC's in Finland een grote hit met het nummer Freestyler. In 2000 verovert dit nummer de rest van Europa en wordt in onder meer Duitsland, Denemarken en Nederland een nummer 1-hit. Opvolger B Boys And Fly Girls haalt #13. De Finse hiphop- en housegroep Bomfunk MC's werd opgericht in 1998. De Bomfunk MC's bestaan uit Raymond Ebanks alias B.O.W. (Brother of Words), Ismo Lappalainen alias DJ Gismo, Ari Toikka (drums) en Ville Makinen AKA Mr Villy (basgitaar/keyboards). In 2002 zal DJ Gismo de groep verlaten, waarna Riku Pentti en Okke Kuomolainen hem vervangen.

Mary Mary is een Amerikaans r&b gospelduo bestaande uit de zussen Erica en Tina Atkins. Shackles is geproduceerd door Warryn Campbell en wordt wereldwijd een grote hit. Van Australië (#2) en Nieuw Zeeland (#8) tot Frankrijk (#13), Noorwegen (#5) en Zweden (#11). Opvolger I Sings met B BJ flopt in oktober. Erica en Tina blijven daarna een mix van gospel, urban, big band en r&b maken, maar halen daar geen Top 40 meer mee.

In 2000 scoort DJ Sonique een grote wereldhit met het nummer It Feels So Good. Opvolger Sky haalt #34. I Put A Spell On You (2001) en Alive (2003) halen de hitparade niet. Sonique werd geboren als Née Sonia Clarke in Londen op 21 juni 1968. De eerste plaat die ze ooit kocht was Donna Summers I Feel Love en dat was volgens eigen zeggen het begin van haar muzikale carriere. Sonique kwam pas echt in de spotlights te staan toen ze zong op de nummers van Mark Moore's S-Express; op de nummers Nothing To Lose en Find´Em, Fool´Em, Forget´Em" in 1990 en 1992. Ze besloot in die tijd dat ze DJ wilde worden.

Marc Anthony (Marco Antonio Muñiz) werd geboren in New York City op 16 september 1968. In 1998 liet Broadway-ster Marc Anthony voor het eerst van zich horen. Met de Australische zangeres Tina Arena scoorde hij een #4 hit met I Want To Spend My Lifetime Loving You uit de film The Mask Of Zorro. Eind 1999 haalde I Need To Know #14. Hun grootste hit wordt de live versie van Nothing Else Matters, die houdt het in 1999 en 2000 in totaal 20 weken uit met nummer 5 als hoogste notering. In 2003 zal Metallica nog twee hits scoren met St. Anger (#22) en Frantic (#32). Lucie Silvas zal in 2005 een cover opnemen. Haar versie van Nothing Else Matters haalt #12. Metallica is een Amerikaanse hardrockband, oorspronkelijk bestaand uit James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, Cliff Burton en Lars Ulrich. Cliff Burton overleed op 27 september 1986 bij een busongeluk. In 2001 verlaat de hem vervangende bassist Jason Newsted de band na een conflict met zanger James Hetfield. In augustus 1991 haalde Metallica hun eerste Top 40-notering met Enter Sandman (#12). In 1994 scoren ze een #3 met One en in 1996 een #9 met Until It Sleeps.
